HISCI Partners with MDSI to Provide Members with Discounted GLN Enumeration Services
The Healthcare Industry Supply Chain Institute (HISCI) and Medical Distribution Solutions, Inc. (MDSI) have entered into an agreement where MDSI will provide discounted GLN enumeration services for HISCI members. Under the terms of the agreement, MDSI will provide HISCI members with access to Axiom Account Integration Services, a Web site service designed to help those in the healthcare supply chain integrate and match master files to the Global Location Number (GLN). Please follow the link below to take advantage of this important HISCI Member benefit: http://www.axiommatch.com/Home.aspx

What is a Global Locator Number, and why is it important?
The Global Location Number (GLN) is a GS1 standards-based, globally unique, 13-digit number used to identify locations and supply chain partners. GLNs can be used to identify a functional entity (like a hospital pharmacy or accounting department), a physical entity (like a warehouse or hospital wing or even a nursing station), or a legal entity (like a health system corporation).

GS1 Healthcare U.S. is the national healthcare industry user group that supports the adoption and implementation of global standards led by GS1 Healthcare. HISCI supports the GS1 Healthcare U.S. Vision, which is to become the recognized, open and neutral source for regulatory agencies, trade organizations and other similar stakeholders seeking input and direction for global standards in healthcare for patient safety, supply chain security and efficiency, traceability and accurate data synchronization in the United States.

What is the 2010 GLN Sunrise, and how does it affect HISCI Members?
To improve patient safety and supply chain efficiency, organizations and companies throughout the U.S. healthcare supply chain have announced their support to adopt GS1 Standards by the industry-accepted sunrise dates of 2010 for the GS1 Global Location Number (GLN) to standardize location identification and 2012 for the GS1 Global Trade Item Number® (GTIN®) to standardize product identification.

The "2010 GLN Sunrise” date (December 2010) established by the healthcare industry calls for the adoption of GLNs in lieu of custom account/location numbers. This means that as of December 31, 2010:
– GLNs are assigned by location owners.
– GLNs are used in appropriate business transactions and processes between trading partners.
– GLN hierarchy is defined and maintained by location owners.
– GLN Registry for Healthcare® is used to facilitate correct location identification.
